  • Health Benefits of Pomegranate

     Health Benefits of Pomegranate

Pomegranates are among the healthiest fruits on earth.

They contain a range of beneficial plant compounds, unrivaled by other foods.

Many studies have shown that they haveincredible benefits for your body, and may lower the risk of all sorts of diseases (1)

Here are evidence-based health benefits of pomegranate.

    1. Pomegranates Are Loaded With Important Nutrients

The pomegranate, or Punica granatum, is a shrub that produces a red fruit (1).

Categorized as a berry, the pomegranate is about 5-12 cm (2-5 inches) in diameter.

It is red, round and looks kind of like a red apple with a flower-shaped stem.

The skin of the pomegranate is thick and inedible, but there are hundreds of edible seeds called arils within.

The arils are what people eat, either raw or processed into pomegranate juice.

Pomegranates have an impressive nutrient profile: One cup of arils (174 grams) contains (2):

    Fiber: 7 grams.Protein: 3 grams.Vitamin C: 30% of the RDA.Vitamin K: 36% of the RDA.Folate: 16% of the RDA.Potassium: 12% of the RDA.

The pomegranate arils (seeds) are also very sweet, with one cup containing 24 gram of sugar and 144 calories.

However, where pomegranates reallyshine is in their content of powerful plant compounds, some of which have potent medicinal properties.

BOTTOM LINE:The pomegranate is a fruit that contains hundreds of edible seeds called arils. They are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals and bioactive plant compounds, but they also contain some sugar.

    2. Pomegranates Contain Two Plant Compounds With Powerful Medicinal Properties

There are two unique substances in pomegranates that are responsible for most of their health benefits.

    Punicalagins

punicalagins are extremely powerful antioxidants found in the juice and peel of a pomegranate.

They are so powerful that pomegranate juice has been found to have three times the antioxidant activity of red wine and green tea (3).

Pomegranate extract and powder is typically made from the peel, due to its high antioxidant and punicalagin content.

    Punicic Acid

punicic acide, also known as pomegranate seed oil, is the main fatty acid in the arils.

It is a type of conjugated leno leik with potent biological effects.

BOTTOM LINE:Pomegranates contain punicalagins and punicic acid, unique substances that are responsible for most of their health benefits.

    3. Pomegranate Has Impressive Anti-Inflammatory Effects

Chronic inflammation is among the leading drivers of many killer diseases.

This includes heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and even obesity.

Pomegranate has potent anty inflammatory properties, which are largely mediated by the antioxidant properties of the punicalagins.

Test tube studies have shown that it can reduce inflammatory activity in the digestive tract, as well as in breast cancer and colon cancer cells (4, 5, 6).

One study in diabetics found that 250 ml of pomegranate juice per day for 12 weeks lowered the inflammatory markers CRP and interleukin-6 by 32% and 30%, respectively (7).

BOTTOM LINE:The punicalagins in pomegranate juice have been shown to reduce inflammation, one of the leading drivers of many killer diseases.

    4. Pomegranate May Help Fight Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men.

Laboratory studies have shown that pomegranate extract can slow down cancer cell reproduction, and even induce apoptosis (cell death) in cancer cells (8, 9).

The PSA (prostate specific antigen) is a blood marker for prostate cancer.

Men whose PSA levels double in a short period of time are at increased risk of death from prostate cancer.

Interestingly, a human study found that 237 ml (8 oz) of pomegranate juice per day increased the PSA doubling time from 15 months to 54 months, which is huge (10).

A follow-up study found similar improvements using a type of pomegranate extract called POMx (11).

BOTTOM LINE:There is preliminary evidence that pomegranate juice can be useful in men with prostate cancer, potentially inhibiting cancer growth and lowering the risk of death.

    5. Pomegranate May Also be Useful Against Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women.

Pomegranate extract has been shown to inhibit reproduction of breast cancer cells, and may even kill some of them (12,13,14).

However, this is currently limited to laboratory studies. More research is needed.

BOTTOM LINE:Laboratory studies have shown that pomegranate extract can help fight breast cancer cells, but human studies are needed to confirm this.

  • You Can Claim Rs. 100 per Day in Case of a Failed ATM Transaction

You Can Claim Rs. 100 per Day in Case of a Failed ATM Transaction

The RBI has issued guidelines for banks for such failed transactions.

Technology has made our lives more comfortable, but at times it can fail, and we have to bear the consequences. Take the case of ATMs. Although they are one of the best inventions to have been made, a failed transaction can put us in a real fix.

The RBI has issued guidelines for banks for such failed transactions.

In case the ATM did not dispense money, and you get a message saying that the account was deducted; the money will not only be returned to your account, you are also entitled to receive compensation.

Here are the some RBI rules that enable you to claim compensation:

    1.    Complaints related to failed ATM transactions should be resolved within 7 working days from the date of submission of complaint at the card issuing branch.

    2.    The cardholder is entitled to compensation of Rs.100 per day if the amount of claim is not credited to the account within seven working days from the date of the complaint.

    3.     Customers are entitled to such compensation only if the claim is lodged with the issuing bank within 30 days from the date of the transaction.

    4.    In case the complaint is not addressed, then the customer can take recourse to the Banking Ombudsman if the grievance is not redressed by his/her card issuing bank.

    5.     The Grievance Redressal Mechanism available to users of WLA(White label ATMs) is same as the mechanism available to users of banks’ ATMs for failed/disputed transactions.

    6.    While the primary responsibility to redress grievances of customers relating to failed transactions at such WLAs will rest with the card issuing bank, the sponsor bank will provide necessary support, ensuring that White Label ATM Operator (WLAO) makes relevant records and information available to the issuing bank.

*”Issuing Bank” means the bank where the customer has an account or the bank that issued the ATM/Debit card to the customer. Bank customers in India can use ATM of any other bank for withdrawing cash. The bank whose ATM is used is called “acquiring bank”.

These guidelines became effective from July 1, 2011, and are subject to conditions stipulated by RBI.

These guidelines replace earlier instructions from 2009, which

allowed banks 12 working days to re-credit the amount after a failed transaction. Although the new guidelines reduce the time available to banks, it is mandatory for customers to register a complaint with the issuing bank within 30 days of the date of the transaction.

It is good to remember that the time limit of 30 days is relevant only for claiming compensation of  ₹ 100 per day of delay. A customer is free to file a complaint of a failed ATM transaction even after 30 days of the transaction; just that he/she can claim the amount of failed ATM transaction without extra compensation.

  • Want to Sell Your Phone? Get a Better Deal With These Startups

Want to Sell Your Phone? Get a Better Deal With These Startups

Selling off old phones and other gadgets can be tricky, because it's hard to know what value you can expect for it. You could always go in for an exchange offer (there are several even when buying online, and at the local store) but the deal you get is rarely as good as when you sell the phone separately.

The problem with a lot of sites that let you advertise your products is that it's hard to get an accurate valuation based on the state of your phone, and you're on your own when it comes to logistics and payments. That's where Atterobay.com and the Cashify app by ReGlobe come into the picture.

There's no need to post an advertisement online, or wait for a prospective buyer. To use Atterobay, just log into the Website and you can sell your phone right away. Simply click through the links and you will be able to find your phone, or you can simply search for it.

Next, you have to answer a few basic questions about the device - how old is it, what condition it's in, and that's all. For a six month old Motorola Moto Turbo, the site offered Rs. 18,899. Once you've confirmed the details, Atterobay sends you protective packaging, and then collects the phone from your home.

The phone is taken to the plant in Roorkee, where it is then examined, and a final value is decided - the company again contacts you and makes the final offer, and if you agree, it either sends a cheque, or makes a bank transfer, as per your preference.

It's a simple enough process that should take only 2-3 days according to the company, but the idea of sending your phone off, without being given your money up-front, is something that can be daunting. And of course, it depends on how honest you are about the condition of your phone - you might have a minor camera issue which the company in its test sees as major.

The Cashify app by ReGlobe tries to address this issue. It's a simple app that lets you sell all your electronics, from laptops to game consoles to washing machines. Through the app, you can directly answer questions about your device and make sure its features work before you try and sell it.

This does a number of things to help the selling process - for one, it identifies the exact brand and model of your phone for ReGlobe, so there can be no confusion. Next, it also checks that the various features of your phone are working properly - it diagnoses your Bluetooth, battery, Wi-Fi, and GPS - which are all done automatically. After that, there are some tests that require your involvement - pressing the volume and power buttons helps it to detect if the inputs are working, then a microphone test requires you to talk into the phone.

Next, it checks the speaker by playing a sound and asking you if you heard it, and then asks you to draw a pattern on the screen to test the touch response. Next, it checks your camera and also your screen for dead pixels. Finally, you have to check a few boxes about the age of the phone, and whether there's a bill, charger, and other accessories.

Once this is done, you can tap the Cashify button and enter your mobile number to get a call from ReGlobe to arrange for a pickup. The advantage of this app is that it allows the company to quickly check the condition of your phone without having to send it to a central location - which means that the payment can happen at the time of pickup; the agent simply needs to confirm the app's report, the physical condition of the phone, and whether the accessories are present, and the phone is good to go.

As of now, ReGlobe is also offering better buyback rates if you use its app, and for the same Moto Turbo, offered Rs. 19,850 - Rs. 1,550 more than what is being offered on the ReGlobe website.

Between Atterobay and ReGlobe, getting a fair price for your old phone isn't that hard - you may still make a little more money if you can find a buyer yourself, but doing that will be a lot more effort as well. And this definitely beats the deals that the local shop will give most people.

There's no Cashify app for iOS as of now, although the company has confirmed that it is working on one. If you're an Android user though, then it is a good idea to install the Cashify app and see what deal you'll get for the phone; check Atterobay as well, and you should be able to get a good price for your old phone. Just remember to delete all the data before you sell it.

  • How do I know if a mobile is genuine or duplicate/fake?

How do I know if a mobile is genuine or duplicate/fake?

IMEI number will be a 15 digit serial number. If you own the phone, you can dial *#06# and your device's IMEI number will be displayed.
If you are going to buy a new phone either the bill sticker should have the IMEI printed on it or somewhere around the box or under the battery of the mobile phone.

You can check the validity of the IMEI number you find using this tool.
    International Numbering Plans, © 2001-2014

And other things to check will be specific to the mobile devices.

    1. Every mobile will have it's manufacturer's logo displayed during the boot time and nothing else. Almost all mobile company will have their logo displayed.

    2. You can look for the color of the mobile phone. Check whether the color you are buying is available with the manufacturer. If not then it's a fake.
